This study of an obscure battle in the 'Hundred Years War' expands forwards and back to cover nine hundred years of golf's development. A coherent narrative shows how modern golf and golf courses grew step by step from simple beginnings. Did golf begin just before the battle of Bauge on Easter Saturday,1421? Or were the Scots playing the local game chole? 'Triple Bauge' (Bo-zhay) looks at the evidence and decides they were playing jeu de paume but goes on to follow a fourth game from Rome through France and England to Scotland.First played in the streets,it soon moved out on to the links at Edinburgh,Perth,Montrose and Aberdeen where it developed into the game we play today. The Old Course at St Andrews, fortunately, still preserves the traces of golf's Norman heritage. Fred Hawtree practised as a golf course architect for fifty years before handing on the torch to his son,Martin. He is a past president of the British Institute of Golf Course Architects with 25 years on the Executive Committee of the English Golf Union and the Board of Sports Turf Research Institute. Following 'Triple Bauge' (1996),Cambuc Archive plan another short historical excursion, ready in 1997.
